  1. Observation:

    Bare Tree Photo

The shades of blue draw me in surrounding a bare tree, one that lost all her leaves months earlier. It is dead silent. The only sound is that of the small breeze. It is cold and usually you would head home in this weather but the landscape is breathtaking. You can see your breath, but it feels nice in your lungs, like you have never taken a breath before. The hairs on my arms are standing up from goose bumps. My ears, nose and cheeks are probably red from the cold, but I feel so peaceful. The white now covers the dead grass in a thin layer, as the sun tries to find its way through the clouds.

The easiest observation to respond to was Room 203 of the CAI Lab. I was in the present in Room 203 so I could use all my senses, like hearing the squeaky chairs and clicking keys on the keyboard, feel the smooth keyboard, and hard desk, and see the bland colors of white and gray that make up the room. Still, I found this observation to be a bit boring.

The hardest observation to respond to was the photo of the instruments. The vibrant colors and wavy lines made it hard to focus on what I saw. There was too much going on. However, since there was so much movement, there was more to respond to.

  2. Molly, I really like this line: "You can see your breath, but it feels nice in your lungs, like you have never taken a breath before." Very original and creative! :)

  3. abstract picture

Music fills my ears. There are faint sounds of piano keys tapping, cello cords being plucked, trumpet buttons being pushed, bongos being tapped. If you choose not to listen to each one individually, you allow the beautiful harmony drag you in. They play so well together. The words being sung, tell a story. They paint a vivid image in my head. The crowd swayed to the beat. I was getting bumped around, and I wasn’t sure why. It defiantly wasn’t music one would mosh to. I ignored that feeling though because as soon as I focused in on the music I was in the zone. It amazed me how people could come together and make such a beautiful melody. They even had a vivid backdrop behind the stage. It was colorful. I was at peace, until some stuck up business women dug her heal into my foot. After that, I was in such pain. I couldn’t get back into it after I experience that. I began to realize all the flaws with this scene. These musicians were all homeless people. The reason it was so crowded was because I was stopped on a street corner in busy New York City. It reeked of body odor and garbage. It’s strange how opening your eyes can completely change your mind about something.

the easiest was the wine ad for me becaue i put myself in that place and easily created a story.

the hardest was the gold lady. im not sure what it wasbut i couldnt put myself in with her to like see what she was experiencing

  4. Observation 1: this room

In this room, every computer is connected to an ugly white Apple monitor. Additionally, all of these computers are powered by Macintosh, which really sucks. The room is very whitish, and the shimmer from the illuminating fluorescent lights adds to the awakening but slightly disturbing feeling. It is rather awkward and feels too modern for a room; however, it is the epitome of a computer lab. Having said that, I’d rather be in a homier room with less keyboard chatter, and I’d rather be in a mellower and less intimidating environment. I would rather be using a PC with a black monitor. Additionally, I would like some more wood, and I would like the place to have a little more contrast. Wooden desks and a slightly rustic feeling is a lot more preferable, even if it is considered to country or retro.

In terms of my senses, it is quite bland, perhaps even a little too dry. I cannot smell anything, but there are no foul odors. There is really nothing bad or pungent. I cannot taste anything in my mouth or see any amazing contrast with my eyes. It is kind of depressing, but there is nothing really negative. With the lack of tastes and the same old white room, I guess it isn’t that depressing; it is just neutral.

If I look around me, I see students all around me. I suppose all of them are just freshman in English 190. I am from the East Coast, from a life I'd rather not talk about, and most of them are probably from the Midwest- that is my assumption. An assumption is the mother of all failures, so I shouldn’t be talking.

    ------

The hardest one was the last one with the instruments.

The easiest one was the second to last one with the tribal woman.

  5. OBSERVATION 4- wine bottle spilled into shape of woman
As he slowly poured out the rich red liquid into the sparkling crystal glasses he had, he knew it was perfect. The table set for two was the epitome of romantie. Twin cream colored candlesticks stood tall and proud on the table with the flame on the wick flickering in perfect beat with the smooth jazz that played in the room. The pure white tablecloth that covered his ugly scratched table hid the imperfections that he also had, and that was exactly what this was, a cover-up. He made a mistake; correction, he made a lot of mistakes but this was a big one. As he finished pouring the second glass, he heard the key gently slide into the doorknob and saw the handle slowly twist. As the door opened, her eyes witnessed the attempt of an apology he displayed on the table. She had to admit, it looked good, but then she spotted a problem. He spilled the burgundy wine on the white tablecloth in the corner. Usually a little spill wouldn’t bother her, but this one was in the shape of his big mistake, the other woman.
The easiest was the room because I was right there witnessing everything.
The hardest was the painting because i didn't just want to appeal to sight.

  6. Amanda, nice representation of reality; how a beautiful moment can be broken by some outside action and all the harmony is lost to a chaotic, disharmonious wall of distraction which blocks the moment from ever returning . . .

  7. Meg, Wonderful images and mystery, objects covering flaws revealing false behavior causing mistakes symbolizing sin . . . Nice little story

  8. Kevin, I must concur with your anti-Mac diatribe . . .

  9. Several buildings line each side of the alley; the clotheslines stretch from window to window. Fabric draped over the lines blows with the wind you can hear the sounds of televisions and pots banging from open windows. Most prolific is the sound of two neighbors yelling across the alley from their windows at each other, both yelling in different languages. The sound of traffic starts up again as the light at the nearby intersection turns green. Someone’s shirt falls off the line and it slowly falls to the ground as horns beep and engines roar something’s don’t rush to off to where they are going, some simply allow fate to take them there, you think as the shirt finally reaches the ground.

  10. I thought the most difficult picture to observe was the last picture. I was getting tired and the picture its self was difficult. I did not know what to describe because there as too much going on. There also was not a specific thing to observe, such as a person or laundry.

I thought the class room was easiest to observe because I was there. I could hear, and see things first hand. I did not have to imagine things or be creative.

THe aroma of the rick red wine filled the room instantly after the cork was popped. The fruity smell filtered into the air as the glasses became full. As the bottle was set back to its resting place on the counter, the bottom slipped and the rub red goodness was split. The red droplets pooled on the floor and beaded together on the counter, The fruity smell filtered again into the tension filled air. The bottle shattered into pieces as it encountered the power of the floor. The next of the bottle stayed strong, and pours it's contents onto the floor. The remains of the royal red form the shape of a woman in ruby red on the floor; now enjoying the party from a new angle.

  11. This is a narrow space between two apartment buildings. The two buildings are old and dirty, and part of its wall turns into yellow. However, some of the window-frames are new and clean and different form the others. The man living in it must have just changed it or clean it frequently. In the narrow space between the two buildings, there are lots of sticks, either from the windows of the left side or from the windows of the right side. The sticks are for air-drying laundries, so on them, there are almost all kinds of clothes, wet or dry, and also sheets. The things there are colorful but not beautiful, the scene makes people feel noisy and massy.

  12. The buildings look like Chinese old buildings. The distance between these two buildings is very narrow. Though these are old buildings, the buildings still look lively. There are many colorful clothes and bed sheets between these two buildings. A gust of wind makes the clothes and sheets wave softly. It looks like they are waving to you to welcome you come to their home. Sometimes, you can hear some beautiful melody which is sent from the buildings. You can even imagine a picture that a couple is dancing tango with the beautiful melody. Everything looks very peaceful here. Though these are old buildings, it gives people a warm feeling. This feeling makes people be eager to come into the buildings and know the stories of everyone lives here.

The first one is the easiest one to write, because I am very familiar with room. And at that moment, I was sitting in this room, so I can carefully observe everything in this room. I can really hear the sounds. I can really know the smell of this room. But for other five pictures, I only can see it. I should imagine the sounds and smell.

The fourth one is hardest for me because there is only a guy in the picture. Form his clothes I know it represents a special culture. So I try to write more about this. Actually, I do not know the culture and the history about this picture. So I have no too much write. This picture is characteristic and special. My thoughts was limited by the history and culture.

  13. Observation 3
    Wash hanging in-between buildings.
Looking out my apartment window from the 10th floor, I can see rows and rows of colorful clothing in hopes of drying from the crisp fall breeze that sweeps though and in-between each building constantly. The smell of fresh baked apple pie fills my nose and I catch myself closing my eyes imagining what it would taste like. My mouth waters as if I’m about to dive into a big hot slice, paired with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. I look out again, and my eyes wander in and out of the various rows of multicolored fabric and settle on a pair of toddler sweatpants. They are so tiny and so tattered; that I wonder how many days it’s been since they have been washed. A quick wind picks up and I see the tiny pants zoom off of the close line and sway back and forth before they plop down on their final destination. They lay, motionless in the middle of the street in a muddy puddle. I hope that those were not his only pants.

  14. Observation 2

The picture is of a lonely tree during a cold winter day. There is a thin layer of snow covering the dead, brown colored grass. It is a cloudy day and the sun is barely shining through. It seems as if it is almost dusk. I feel serenity when I look at this picture because as I imagine myself being present, it is extremely peaceful. I can feel the cool wind lightly blowing and gently hitting my face. No one is in sight, not even a small animal. All I can see is small, bare trees in the distance.

I found the observation of the room to be the easiest because I was present in the room itself. It was easier to describe what I heard and smelt.

The last observation of an abstract picture was the hardest for me to describe. I had a lot of thoughts going through my head, but I couldn't manage to make them detailed enough so the observer could see what I saw.

  15. A brisk winter breeze whispers softly and briefly to the few bare trees in the area. All else is quiet, and there is not even a chirp of a bird or a howl of a wolf to be heard. They have hidden from the bitter cold, and remain safe and warm in the shelters they found months earlier in preparation for this arctic weather they sensed was coming. A fresh blanket of snow covers the ground from only a few hours earlier, leaving the area with a peaceful stillness. In a matter of weeks, the still, white earth will become awaken, and will be filled with life and the vibrant colors of spring. For now, however, the inhabitants of these few trees and the surrounding areas will remain protected in their safe havens.

I found the observation of the computer lab the easiest because we were actually there and could use all of our senses and did not really have to imagine anything.

I found the fourth observation, the portait of the person to be the hardest because there was not a lot going on in the picture and it was difficult to think of what to write about it.

  16. Observation number six: Picasso artwork

You suddenly find yourself surrounded in a swirly of disarray like a hurricane of color. Quickly the confusions makes way for the eye of the storm as you study each element and a calm washed over you. To one side you have an egocentric violin pushing its way to the surface, wanting to be seen and heard by all. The almond brown wood has faded from use giving the instrument a rich vibration. Lines swirl out of the hollow wood and you can almost hear the sounds moving across the page. They join in with the deep bellow of the glossy brass horn colliding with the playful scales on the piano, that slide around the picture like water across a smooth canvas. The loud boom of the drums intermixes with the harmonious humming of the flute laying just underneath the rest, out of sight, but not out of sound. Together they make a beautiful melody of sight and sound.

The easiest was the picture of the tree. There were many comparisons to coldness and sadness you could make from the picture.

The hardest would be the picutre of the girl. It wasn't enought to describe what she looked like. You had to investigate who she was and what she was thinking.

  17. I thought the hardest observation was the one of the woman. I thought the last one was hard to describe so I kind of went with a story that came to my mind as I observed the picture:

    Observation #6 Picture- Piano

Once again, he struts into the coffee shop down the street from school. The grad student tosses his back pack on the mint green chair, shouts playfully to Mike for a latte and sits down to start his work. His blue eyes watch his computer screen and his fingers crisply hit the keys as he works on his dissertation, again. Despite his intent stare and crisp typing, his feet tap gently. They tap gently to the sound of the music the woman with the long dark curls places on the piano. His right hand occasionally reaches for his coffee and his left hand occasionally reaches for the pen behind his ear. Hours later, as the piano still plays, he shuts his lap top, tosses his coffee into the trash and struts out. The student comes back the following day, everyday actually, repeats the routine and struts out as gently as his feet were tapping just moments earlier.

  18. I thought the easiest one to respond to was the CAI room. I was present in the room so I was able to first-hand describe what was going on and able to incorporate all of my senses while writing.

I thought the hardest one to respond to was the last abstract picture. I didn't know what to write about so I just described all of the different colors and shapes in the picture.

    Winter Landscape Picture:
Standing in the middle of the bleak, vast, snowy space, the winds whisk past me. As I clench my hood tighter around my head, I look around and smell the scent of winter. I feel presence around me but as I look to see who’s there, I only notice a barren tree in the middle of the landscape. I hear the howl of a coyote and jerk my head to where the sound came from. No one is there. The crescent moon looms over me and is my warmth for the night.

  19. The lonley tree picture spoke to me the most. I felt I could accurately describe what was going on, without actually being there.

The most difficult piece for me to describe was the wine bottle. I found the picture a little confusing and couldnt come up with a symbol to accurately describe the picture.

As the sun tries to peak through the gray clouds, a lonely tree stands shivering in the middle of winter. A light icy snow covers the ground. There is no life in this place except for a lonely boy with his dog. The boy and his dog climb through the snow to get to the tree. With each step they take, CRUNCH goes the ice under their feet. The smell of winter is very brisk. The boy shivers uncontrollably. The boy’s dog comes up next to him to keep him warm. He can barely feel the tips of his finger and toes, and his nose is completely numb. He calls for help. All he hears back is his own echo. Is he goes to survive?

  20. Observation 2: describe picture
The lone tree seems to be dead; there are not leaves, and the twigs and branches are thin. It is set on barren land with only a couple of trees in the far distance. There is snow on the ground, and the sky is a cloudy and dismal gray. All I can hear is the wind whipping my face and hair while it chills me from head to toe. The land seems unfertile, at least for the winter. The only colors I see are shades of gray and brown. There is barely any wildlife. No bugs, squirrels, or people in sight, and only a few birds flying in the distance.

the easiest observation for me was observing lab, because i was actually in it. however, the 2nd one, observing the picture of the tree and snow was also kind of cool to me because i used my imagination.

the most difficult one for me i think was either the picture of musical instruments or the picture of the spilled wine with the lady in it. these both were tough to create stories for, because there was not a scene, i had to make it up.

  21. The tree picture
The picture is of a cool, crisp winter’s night. The wind is blowing fresh snow around in the distance with the light and gentle breeze. The tree stands alone in the field where all the snow has fallen off its dead branches and onto the already snow covered knoll. The dark clouds are covered in the scent of fresh, light snow and it is so cold it would cause a child’s face to blotch with redness and cool the tip of her nose.
