Prot/Porter: Alien or not? Why?

Using evidence from the movie and your own arguments, tell me whether you think the Kevin Spacey character in K-PAX was an alien or not? Be specific.

  1. I don't believe Prot was an alien. I think Porter, made himself believe he was from another planet because he did not want to face reality. The reality he feared was the fact that his wife and daughter were murdered as well as the fact that he murdered the man who killed his family. I think Porter used his knowledge of the stars/planets to make up his life on a different planet. Since he was intelligent he knew how the planet orbited therefore he was able to show the astronomers how the suns/moons orbited. Also, when Porter was hypnotized he was talking about himself even though he said he was talking about “a friend”. He was telling Mark about his life from his childhood years up until the death of his wife and daughter. If Prot was an alien, according to him, he would not have had a family like Porter did. I think Prot made a new identity for himself so he could forget about his horrifying past and live life as if nothing ever happened.

  2. I do not believe Prot is an alien. I believe that Prot thinks he is an alien because it is the only way he can deal with the trauma of losing his wife and daughter. Even though Prot makes it seem extremely possible that he is an alien from KPAX, I just think that he created this planet as a way to escape from his pain he was feeling here on Earth.

  3. I do not think Prot was an alien. although he gives a lot of explanation as to why he "is," there are many factors that point to no. the strongest argument as to the fact that he is not an alien is that he never left earth; he just went into a quiet daze. however, he has been through alot, and Prot, Robert's alter-ego (and vice versa) stayed on the planet as bascially a mute. he also claimed that he left earth and traveled for a few days when he went missing, but he is a genius, as we saw from him showing the paths of KPAX, and could have figured out how to escape, and later help bess escape.

  4. I do not believe Prot was an alien. Robert Porter created Prot to help him cope with the death of his wife and daughter. At first, I believed there was a possibility he was an alien (just like Mark did) because he gave evidence like knowing the orbital of K-PAX when almost no one else did and seeing ultraviolet light. However, once Mark found out what happened to Robert's wife and daughter, I knew that he created Prot to deal with the pain. He created a life where none of the pain he felt on earth existed. At the end of the movie, Bess and Prot switched places, and Robert comes back.

  5. Prot is not an alien. Prot is the facade used by Robert Porter to forget his horrible past. Their are many coincidental pieces of evidence that may indicate Prot is actually from K-Pax but because Prot never actually leaves and his report stays behind as well, he is simply a fake persona used by Robert Porter so he can deny the past.

  6. I do not think Prot is an alien. Prot is just another Robert Porter from his deep mind. Robert Porter is suffering the pain of losing his wife and daughter, and at the same time, he notice the importance of the family and friend, so Prot comes out to help the others and enjoy the happiness of having "families". After five years, when he thinks his work is done, he decided to "leave', which means the "Prot" in the deep mind of Robert dispears.

  7. Prot is an alien. At the end of the movie, Prot sat on the wheelchair with a dull look in his eyes. It was totally different from that "clever and lively Prot". This alien was called Prot, he came to earth to help Robert. When Robert wanted to kill himself, Prot came into the body of Robert. From the movie, we knew that Prot knew the way to K-PAX; Prot could talk with dog; Prot eat banana with skins. What's more, Prot brought Bess to K-PAX. Bess was homeless, sensitive and kind. So the alien wanted to help her.

  8. Prot is not an alien. He refuses to live his life as Robert Porter because of the huge trauma with the loss of his family. There is evidence on both sides of the argument of whether Prot was an alien or not, but more evidence backs up that Prot was not an alien. I believe that Prot created this place called K-PAX because it is the utopia that he wishes he lived in after the loss of his family. The strongest piece of evidence is that Prot never physically leaves on the date he says he is supposed to. Prot is a facade that Robert uses to help others because he was helpless when he lost his wife and child.

  9. I do not believe that Prot is an alien. When he was under hypnosis, it became obvious that he was actually Robert Porter because of the way he reacted to the questions he was asked. Also, at the Fourth of July party with Mark's family, Robert instictively tried to "save" Mark's daughter from the sprinkler because it sparked his bad memories. Also, Prot's views on certain subjects such as family reflect his experiences because since he no longer has a family, he claims that family is not important on K-Pax.

  10. I don't think that Prot is an alien, although at times he is pretty convincing. He was a genius. He knew about a constallation that only a handful of people know. He never actually does leave though. He goes on a trip, which is just him leaving the hospital for a few days. I think that after Robert attempted to drown himself, a lot messed up for him. So he needed to claim a new identity. It also cause him to see UV rays which could have been a mutation. The main reasons I believe he's a human is because of the hard evidence from the police report and the yearbook, and the fact that he never leaves. He talk a lot about light travel but never performs it. When they are at the planetarium, he claims to have gone and left in the blink of an eye, and at the hospital, he just collapses under the bed. Once again this fail leaves him in a weird state. This time it's a catatomic state.

  11. I do not believe Prot was an alien. I think Robert created an alter-ego, Prot, to escape from the pain he suffered in his life. The reality of his wife and daughter being murdered was too painful to face. He was a genius which could explain how he knew about the constellation in detail. People were drawn to him because he was different, not because he was an alien. He never left earth, which gives me reason to believe he was not an alien.

  12. I do not think Prot was an alien. He did know some very specific information that most humans did not, which at first led me to believe that he did indeed come from another world. Several other factors showed that he was from this planet K-PAX, such as speaking to animals, viewing UV rays, and many other things. However, there was an explanation for almost every one of these points. After learning about Robert Porter's past, I realized that such an incredibly traumatic experience would indeed leave a person psychologically crippled and delusional. So Prot was not an alien, simply Robert Porter's alter ego, a person he created to escape his own haunted past.

  13. I believe Prot is an alien because l believe the movie was trying to convey there are other lives out there that come to help us. I think Prot took over the body of Robert Porter to learn about Earth. I think it was easy for Prot to help Robert because it was an especially difficult time for him after the death of his family. Although all of his odd behaviors can be explained by reasonable events, I like to believe they are caused because Prot is an alien. In the end although Robert Porter stays on Earth, I do not think he is Prot. I believe Prot returns to K-Pax in his original body, and that he takes Bess with him.

  14. I do not believe that Prot was an alien because first of all, there is no such thing as aliens, and we have no proof that they ever have existed. It would be easy for Prot to make up that he was an alien because he was really smart, an almost genius. He could have memorized the spot at where his constellation was, he could have come in a crowd in the train station where nobody saw him, and he could easily tell people and make up information about KPAX. We found out that he is actually Robert Porter, and if he is already someone on earth, then he is just either fooling people or he really believes he is something that he is not.

  15. Prot is not an alien. When a person experiences extreme tragedy in their life, the body's automatic response is to protect you. When Robert Porter discovered that his family was murdered, his mind developed an alternative personality that is psychologically detached from the tragedy. Prot served to protect Porter. Also, all the evidence that could be used to prove Prot is an actual alien may be explained to prove he is actually human. The only thing that cannot be explained is the ability to see ultraviolet light, but beyond that, all signs point to human. Prot is not a alien, but is Robert Porter, human.

  16. I think that Prot is not an alien. My theory is based around Prot's behavior during hypnosis. While in the trance he takes on a very child-like state that mirrors the age of Robert Porter. He also has very strong emotional feelings that go along with the traumas of Porter's life. Prot claims to have to emotional feelings to things such as family so this contradicts what he said. I feel that Porter created Prot as a defense mechanism to avoid facing the fact that his wife and daughter were killed. Porter did not have the mental capacity to grasp the enormity of the situation so he instead created an alibi. When he was Prot, an alien who did not have a family and looked down upon "an eye for an eye," he did not have to face the grief or guilt that Porter had.

  17. I do not think that Prot was an alien. I do, however, think that Porter convinced himself that he was an alien in order to cope with the traumatic experiences he had in his life. By convincing himself that he was an alien, he was able to forget about his past experience by pretending that he was an alien. This pretending and creation of "Prot" began as a coping mechanism and turned into a reality for Porter, this was probably due to more psychological issues that we were not made aware of through the video.
